We must report with regret that two of our of our governors will not be staying on. They are Paul Perez, 52-55, 5th Div, FP2, and Bill Maine, 87-89, W-3, CWO. Paul and Barbara have been our storekeepers for many years and have done a yeoman job. We wish to give both Paul and Bill our thanks for their participation in keeping our Association alive and to help make our reunions a success. This means we have openings on the Board of Governors. Anyone interested in running for officer or governor please contact Bill Dutton, 45-52, 7th Div, MMR2, our nominating chairman, write him at P.O. Box 350, Bath, ME. The election will be held during our General Meeting. We would like to hear from our younger members, say those who served aboard SIERRA in the 70's, 80's and 90's.

I am writing disappointedly because my son and I will be unable to attend this year's reunion in Erie. My cancer has been aggressively growing and the chemo treatments have been also more aggressively stronger causing some bad side effects. We were looking forward to attending. We will miss you all; We really have had a lot of fun and enjoyment at the last reunions that we've attended. I would like to look forward to the 2008 reunion. You and the association put a lot of effort and time to have these successful reunions." (DPR: Steve, we wish you well and look forward to seeing you at our 2008 reunion.)

Fred Ross, 56-59, Deck, FT3, writes, "My apologies for forgetting to send money. I have had a few challenging months. December 19th I had a quadruple bypass operation. Two weeks later a blood clot caused another five days in the hospital. As of late, I feel good." (DPR: Hope you continue to recover.)

Received this from Bill Ratering, 43-47, 7th Div, CMMS, "I know it's a little late but Arlean and I want to thank the officers and the Association for the plaque you gave us at the reunion in Jacksonville, FL. At the time I was speechless and couldn't have a word to say (DPR: That's a first!) only thank you. We were proud to be in the group of the "Proclamation"; we traveled over corners of the U.S. to visit with one another and enjoyed their friendship.

The Watch

Aye mates, for years this man stood the watch...
While some of us lay about our bunks at night
This Sailor stood the watch.
While others of us were attending schools,
This sailor stood the watch.
And yes, even before many of us were born,
This sailor stood the watch.
As our families watched the storm clouds of war
Brewing on the horizons of history,
He stood the watch.
This sailor looked ashore and saw his family
Often needing his guidance but he knew he must stay
Because he had the watch.
For many years he had stood the watch so that we and
Our fellow countrymen could sleep soundly,
In safety knowing that a sailor would stand the watch,
Today we are here to say the watch stands relieved.
Relieved by those you have led, guided, and trained.
Shipmate,
You stand relieved, we have the watch,
Boatswain stand by to pipe the side,
Shipmate going ashore.

  CLOSING THOUGHTS

As reminder we will vote at the General Meeting on the proposal to spend $3000 for a plaque of the SIERRA to be housed on the Memorial Commemorative Wall in the Naval Heritage Center in Washington, D.C. Other warships and tenders have their plaques there.

We would like to reiterate our desire for you younger shipmates to get involved with the Association by showing an interest in becoming a governor or officer. The present crew is getting on and we want to perpetuate the life of our Association and in order to do so we need new blood pumped in.

So please give some serious thought and write or call Bill Dutton.

Have a great summer and we hope to see you all in Erie, PA.
