THE SIERRAN NEWSLETTER

ISSUE #81                                                                                                                              AUGUST 2008

This is an important issue since it's the last one before the reunion.  Further, it contains the Plan of the Day, Registration and Reservation forms. Since we would like to have a successful reunion we urge you to register and reserve a room early. Remember the cut off date is September 2, 2008.

There is a correction to the Plan of the Day in the last newsletter (printed version). The departure date should October 5 not October 9; mea culpa.

A reminder for all officers and governors to make your own reservations arriving September 30 and departing October 5, 2008.

Anyone interested in running for any office in the Association to please contact Bill Dutton, 45-52, 7th Div, MMR2, our Nominating Chairman. Contact Bill at P.O. Box 350, Bath ME 04530 or at (207) 443-2090. We would like to see more of our younger shipmates involved in this regard.

If by chance you misplaced your copy and/or need one?

Lester was a Life Member

Also deceased is Barbara Perez, Jordan, NY, Paul's wife. Barbara died June 11, 2008. Barbara and Paul, 52-55, 5th Div, FP2, served as our storekeepers for many years. Added to this Paul also lost his mother on June 14, 2008. We send our condolences to Lester Bell's family and to our shipmate Paul Perez.
May all our deceased shipmates and deceased family members rest in peace.

   CREW'S NEWS

Frank Savino received this from new member Ken Russell, 83-87, R Div, LCDR, "Enclosed is my first year membership dues. I hope to send many more. I served as the ARO from December of 83 to February of 87. I seem to remember about 537 people in Repair Department that were extremely smart. Every time I turned around they were making me look good. I hope to hear from some of my shipmates."

Mary Louise Spain, Rusty's (44-45, E Div, LT) widow, sent my wife Janice and I the following, "For the first time since Rusty's death I am going to have to miss the SIERRA reunion in Portsmouth, VA. I leave September 23rd for Normandy and Brittany and will not return until October 4th. Wouldn't you know it - two days late and I shudder to think how many dollars short. My magic carpet has been working overtime this year with a theater trip to London this spring and a more recent sojourn to Venice and the northern part of Italy. Lake Como and our villa in Bellagio were spectacular but we didn't get to see George Clooney! He doesn't know what he missed. Shortly after my return from Normandy I'm headed for Hawaii and in early December I'll be in New York. By that time I'll be worn out and broke, but I hope to recuperate so I can join you in Branson next year! I hope you and the family are doing well and having a good summer. Keep cool, and take greetings to all of my SIERRA friends." (DPR: Mary Louise I didn't think SIERRA had royalty visiting foreign lands. Have a safe trip.)

Jack Richison, 44-45, F Div, FC2, writes to Frank, "I am a Plank Owner and served aboard the USS SIERRA until early 1945 when I transferred to a destroyer (DD 747). I became an octogenarian on November 20, 2005. I would appreciate receiving my Life Member Certificate. I have been on dialysis for the past year so it makes out of town vacations difficult to arrange. Thank you and all of the officers for your service to the association." (DPR: Jack your kind note will serve as a reminder for all our shipmates who reach eighty years to let us know so you can become a Life Member.)

Robert Lawton, 46-47, M Div, BTR2, writes, "I reached that age of 80 years on January 9th of this year. I guess this makes me a Life Member. Hope to see you all at the reunion in Portsmouth this year."

Frank received this from Louis Bozzuto, 52-55, R-5, FF3, "Enclosed please my check for $20.00 to cover my dues. I also will be 80 years old in October. My how the years have flown by. Had a nice long talk with Dale Weed. We were both in the Carpenter Shop together. Never could figure out Chief Bonds. It was surprising what we had in common and the places we were. Thanks again. Oh I won't be able to attend the reunion in Norfolk. My wife is unable to travel. Anyway give the gang my best and enjoy the get together."

This from Bobby G. Renfro, 59-60, 1st Div, BMSN, "Enclosed are my dues for 2008. Judy and I will not be able to attend the reunion in October, but we are looking forward to going to Branson next year (which is in our 'neck of the woods'). I hope we have a good turnout there is so much to be there. I appreciate the hard work that Harold Buehler has done and finally getting the reunion in Branson."

Lewis A. Miller, 59-61, R-1 Div, GM1, writes, "Enclosed are my dues for 07 and 08. Sorry I'm late on them. By the way, I will be 80 on May 9, 2009. You said to you know. I hope all is well with everyone. Maybe we can see you all in Branson, MO in 2009." (DPR: This is a first, all these brand new eighty year olds being reported in the newsletter. We hope those members out there, as mentioned above, who are eighty or approaching this fine age, will let us know.)

A LITTLE LIGHT HUMOR?

A golfer hooked his tee shot over a hill and onto the next fairway. Walking toward his ball, he saw a man lying on the ground, groaning with pain.
"I'm a lawyer," said the prostrate man, "and this is going to cost you $5,000."
"I'm sorry, I'm really sorry," replied the concerned golfer. "But I did yell 'fore'."
"I'll take it," said the lawyer.
