THE SIERRAN NEWSLETTER

ISSUE #89
        Web Site: www.uss-sierra-vets.org                             JULY/AUGUST 2010

Well boys and girls it's only about three months until we hold our reunion at Port-O-Call Hotel in Ocean City, NJ. We would like to again remind all to get your registration and hotel reservations in early. We would like to have a good showing from our shipmates from all over the USA, but especially like to see shipmates from New Jersey as well as New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland. This is the closest location for reunion we ever had for the aforementioned states. The registration and hotel reservation forms including the plan of the day are again published in this newsletter. We should all have a good time at the banquet and on the tours, especially the USS New Jersey.

Please check your address on the envelope. If there is a year noted on it this indicates the last year your dues were paid. This is used merely as a reminder to have your membership status up to date.

A LITTLE LIGHT HUMOR ?

The children were lined up in the cafeteria of a Catholic elementary school for lunch. At the head of the table was a large pile of apple's. The nun made a note, and posted on the Apple tray: "Take only ONE. God is watching." moving further role of the lunch line, at the other end of the table was a large pile of chocolate chip cookies. CREW'S NEWS

E-mail from Joe Bateman (55-57), "just received my copy of the newsletter and I regret to inform you that I won't be able to attend the reunion. I finished a 14 day stay in the hospital due to leukemia complications. Right now I couldn't walk the length of the Sierra from that stem to stern. I don't know what the next few months holds for me. They tell me things will improve. I know everyone will enjoy the USS New Jersey. I went aboard her when they first opened her up to the public. I know I had better make next year's reunion because D.C. is in my wife's hometown. I wish everyone and is enjoyable reunion and hope to see you next year." (DPR: I responded that I hoped things would improve and get well soon so he'll be able to make the Washington DC reunion next year.)

This from James L. McCalla (5963), "Enclosed $20.00 for dues to USS Sierra AD-18 Veterans Association. Aboard 06-59 to 11-63. can't make the reunion this year, maybe next."

Rick Donahue (73-75), "here are my dues plus some catching up. Somehow paying my dues escapes me until I get a newsletter. The Bay City area is waiting for a final approval to have the USS Edison DD-946 here as a museum. It will be like the 'new' destroyers I worked on wall on the Sierra."

Robert Simensen (76-79) writes, "Cannot attend this year's reunion; I have to cut back the schedule somewhat - 2008 USS Ajax AR6 and Norway relatives, 2009 USS Epperson DD-719 and family in California, 2010 USS Hector AR-7. going to set forward in a year now, getting too much to travel. Last Sierra was the one in Charleston decommissioning. Will try for next reunion."

Malcolm received this from Mrs. Phyllis Bishop, widow of Leo Bishop (44-45), "I spoke to Mr. Romando and he told me to send you might check for the dinner at the reunion in October. I am so looking forward to it. It has been a while since I attended one."
